Adra celebrates first homes built to Passivhaus standards
Adra, one of north Wales leading housing associations are proud to celebrate the completion of another high quality, high efficiency estate of much needed homes at Cae Penrhyn, Plas Penrhyn.
The £6million development was part funded by the Welsh Government through Conwy County Borough Council, the homes built on land released by Conwy County Borough Council are constructed to Passivhaus standards.
The development includes eight 3-bed and eight 2-bed houses, four 2-bed bungalows and one adapted 2-bed wheelchair friendly bungalow, all with designated parking.
Recently Adra welcomed a delegation from Conwy County Borough Council to tour the newly completed homes.
These homes are highly insulated, triple glazed, and feature airtight seals to minimise heat loss. All homes have mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems, extracting stale air and bringing in fresh air warmed by a heat exchanger unit, reducing the need for heating. The primary source of heating for the homes is “passive” / “secondary” heating from everyday electrical equipment in the home, solar gains and even body heat from the occupants.
Solar panels on the roof contribute to powering the electrical equipment, resulting in a very low carbon footprint and running costs. The homes are also fitted with electric car chargers.
Gareth, Adra’s Senior Project Manager said: “These types of homes are a first for Adra, having worked closely with Creating Enterprise in the design and development of the timber frame and Passivhaus fabric, with Beech developments managing an efficient and quality build, the result has been an overwhelming success.
“Residents will benefit from increased energy efficiency and reduced bills, and we hope this marks the beginning of similar future developments. Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint aligns with our mission to benefit tenants and contribute positively to environmental sustainability.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this project. A special thank you to Conwy County Borough Council for their collaborative efforts, ensuring affordable homes in the Penrhyn Bay area. We look forward to seeing the houses become homes as the families move in.”
Katie Clubb, Head of Strategic Housing at Conwy County Borough Council:
“We’re incredibly proud to be working with Adra on this exciting project. It’s a fantastic example of how strong partnerships can deliver real solutions to help tackle the housing crisis. By working together, we’re creating high-quality homes that will make a lasting difference to our communities.”
