Help prevent wildfires
During periods of warm, dry weather, the risk of wildfires increases significantly. These incidents can spread rapidly, causing extensive damage to wildlife, natural habitats and the environment, while also placing additional pressure on fire and rescue services.
Everyone can play a part in helping to protect our countryside and green spaces.
How you can help:
Leave the barbecue at home
If you’re planning a day out, choose a picnic instead of using a barbecue. Even barbecues that appear to be extinguished can retain enough heat to ignite dry vegetation.
Dispose of cigarettes safely
Make sure cigarettes and other smoking materials are fully extinguished before disposing of them responsibly.
Take your litter home
Glass bottles and other litter can pose a fire risk. In some circumstances, sunlight shining through or reflecting off glass can contribute to fires starting. If there isn’t a bin available, please take your rubbish home with you.
Do not light campfires
Campfires can quickly get out of control, particularly during dry conditions. Avoid lighting fires in the countryside or natural areas.
If you see a fire
If you spot a fire or suspect a wildfire has started, call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
By taking a few simple precautions, we can all help protect our natural environment and reduce the risk of wildfires this summer.
