“I’d be lost without her”
Cynthia’s story and the difference Tenancy Supports makes
Cynthia is one of the tenants in Hafan Elan, Llanrug. She’s had many happy years here and receives weekly visits from one of our Supported Housing Officers, Bev.
Health issues mean that Cynthia can no longer leave her home on her own, and although she has a wonderful family who visit regularly, Bev’s support and companionship give her an extra level of independence.
In the close‑knit community of Hafan Elan, Bev runs weekly events for the residents as well as non-residents. The café is always open on Monday lunchtimes, and there’s bingo every Wednesday, both offer a weekly chance to socialise and catch up with neighbours. On top of this, Bev organises seasonal events at Christmas, Easter, St David’s Day, Pancake Day and more.
Although Cynthia’s home is just a stone’s throw from the community centre, without Bev’s help escorting her in her wheelchair, she simply wouldn’t be able to go.
“I’d be lost without her,” says Cynthia, who loves joining in the fun at the café and at bingo.
“Having the pleasure of people means the world to me.”
As she enjoys her lunch with a neighbour, sharing a joke about keeping an eye on each other from their homes, Cynthia says how much she looks forward to seeing Bev each week. It means a great deal to her to have support available right from her home, and a familiar face offering a helping hand or a friendly chat over a cup of tea. Without Bev’s help, there would be far fewer opportunities for her to see people outside of her family.
Thanks to Bev’s support, Cynthia can continue living independently in her own home, while still feeling part of the community around her.
