Keep safe around water

We want you to have an enjoyable and safe summer.

The hot weather carries with it several dangers, and many of us go to the beach or enjoy a walk along local rivers and lakes. Although this is a great way to relax, it is important to remember that water can be dangerous even on warm days.

We encourage everyone to think about water safety, stick to the paths, and follow any local warning signs.

  • Always take extra care around the edge of water, as it is easy to slip on wet or uneven surfaces.
  • Do not dive or jump straight into open water, this can cause cold water shock, which can be fatal even on the warmest day.
  • Remember that water in rivers, lakes and the sea is not warm, even in summer.
  • If you find yourself unexpectedly in the water, try not to panic. Stretch your arms and legs and float on your back until the effects of cold-water shock have passed.
  • Never swim alone in open water.
  • Always keep an eye on children when they are near water.
  • If you are on the beach, try to swim between the red and yellow flags where lifeguards are on duty.
  • If you see someone in trouble in the water, don’t risk yourself to save them, call 999 or 112 and ask for help.
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be home.
