Making Every Day Easier: The Impact of Our Support Team

“Our quality of life has really changed now.” 

Those are the words of Maldwyn, one of our tenants at Plas Leiod in Caernarfon. Maldwyn is a full‑time carer for his wife, Mary. Before moving to Plas Leiod recently, the couple were living in a private rented flat. Now, they’re in a modern, adapted home and receive weekly support from Haf, one of our Support Officers. The move has transformed their day‑to‑day life. 

Mary’s new home has been specifically adapted to meet her health needs. There’s a hoist in the bedroom which makes everyday tasks like washing and showering much easier. The wider doorways mean she can use her wheelchair comfortably throughout the flat, and she’s able to enjoy the communal lounge at Plas Leiod too. 

Maldwyn loves gardening and can’t wait to take Mary out in her wheelchair to the community garden this summer, something that hasn’t been possible for them for a long time. 

Plas Leiod is are Independent Living Flats, every tenant receives support from our team. Haf visits Maldwyn weekly for a catch‑up over a cuppa and to help with anything they need. Before the couple moved in, Shian, our Lettings Officer, worked closely with them to make sure everything went smoothly, from checking the flat was suitable for Mary to sorting out accounts with utility companies. Not a small task! 

“They’re the best people I’ve had in a long time, incredibly helpful,” says Maldwyn. 

Although they’ve only been here a few weeks, the difference is already clear. Maldwyn feels more settled, more supported, and more hopeful. He’s now a regular at the local shop and chippy and can pop into town easily. They’ve also had far more visits from family and friends, something that means the world to them. They enjoyed a wonderful first Christmas in their new home too. 

And alongside the social benefits, living at Plas Leiod has also brought significant savings, with energy costs around £200 a month cheaper. 

It’s obvious to see how happy the pair are in their new home. We wish both Maldwyn and Mary every happiness here. Their story is a perfect example of the difference we can make as a team – support that goes far beyond housing.
