Running a Business from Home

We understand that some people run small businesses from home.

Here is a short guide to help you.

Before you start

As a tenant (contract holder), you can run different types of businesses from your home, but you need our written permission first.

What does “business use” mean?

Business use means:

Creating a product or offering a service for other people, not just for you or your family.
Receiving payment for your product or service.

What types of businesses are reasonable to run from home?

We will usually give permission if:

  • The business does not cause nuisance or disturbance to neighbours.
  • There are no large or intrusive signs or advertising boards outside the home.
  • You get written permission from us for any work or changes needed for the business.
  • You do not use large-scale manufacturing equipment.
  • You do not store flammable materials (e.g. propane or butane gas cylinders).
  • You have the correct planning permission, licences or registrations.
  • You do not cause damage to the home.
  • The business does not break any terms of your contract.
