Myth‑Busting Sheltered Housing: The Real Difference a Warden Makes
We provide sheltered housing schemes across north Wales, offering safe, comfortable homes for people who want to live independently while still having the reassurance of regular support.
Last week, we visited tenants at Llys yr Eifl to hear first‑hand about their experiences and one message came through loud and clear:
“We’d be lost without Simone.”
Simone is the Sheltered Housing Officer (warden) at Llys yr Eifl, and the tenants spoke warmly about the difference she makes to their daily lives. Their words highlight something important: Many people still have the wrong idea about what a warden does.
Today, we want to clear that up.
We’re proud of the work our sheltered housing teams do every day. Their support helps tenants feel secure, valued, and connected and we’re committed to making sure this continues.
The conversations at Llys yr Eifl over a cuppa reminded us that sheltered housing isn’t just about providing homes. It’s about providing support, dignity and a community.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
Myth 1: “A warden just checks in once a week.”
Reality: The role is far more than a quick visit.
Wardens like Simone, support tenants with practical day‑to‑day issues, Heulwen mentioned that she struggled with her new Sky package recently, Simone was there to guide her through it, “ I don’t know how I would’ve been able to set it up and use it otherwise, it’s about all these small things that makes life easier” she said. Wardens can also help to identify concerns early and provide reassurance and advice. This reassurance extends to the wider family,
“Having Simone’s support is not only piece of mind for me but my family too, they know she’s here to look out for me, and she’d let them know if anything happened,” said Mary.
Myth 2: “Sheltered housing is only for people who can’t live independently.”
Reality: Tenants at Llys yr Eifl live fully independent lives. A Warden helps build independence, not dependence. The service provides safety, peace of mind and a familiar face who understands their needs.
This support helps people stay independent for longer, not shorter.
Simone arranges a wide range of activities at the communal centre in Llys yr Eifl, from the gardening club, to bingo, Easter Dinner, chair aerobics there’s something for everyone. The centre is a hub to draw everyone together:
“The Communal area helped me settle. I moved from a different area to be close to my family, Simone encouraged me to visit the activities being held here and I’ve made life-long friends because of it. I’m very grateful.” said Mary.
Simone’s impact as a Warden is felt far beyond the weekly visit.
We’re proud of the work our sheltered housing teams do every day. Their support helps tenants feel secure, valued, and connected and we’re committed to making sure this continues.
