Wildfire advice for our tenants
We are monitoring the wildfire incidents currently affecting parts of North Wales. Our thoughts are with those communities and emergency service personnel responding to these events. We encourage all customers in affected areas to follow the advice below and keep up to date with information from the Emergency Services and local authorities.
While many residents may not be directly impacted by the fires themselves, some customers may experience smoke, poor air quality, ash deposits or strong smoke odours in and around their homes.
If you are affected by smoke
- Keep windows and external doors closed where possible.
- Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, particularly if smoke levels are noticeable.
- If you have respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD or heart conditions, keep any prescribed medication nearby and follow your healthcare professional’s advice.
- Use extractor fans sparingly if they draw outside air into your home.
- Bring pets indoors if it is safe to do so.
If ash or soot is present
- Avoid sweeping dry ash, as this can put particles back into the air.
- Lightly dampen ash before cleaning it up.
- Wear gloves when cleaning affected surfaces.
- Wash any home-grown fruit or vegetables before consumption if ash has settled on them.
- If you collect rainwater for gardening, consider checking for contamination before use.
If you smell smoke inside your home
- Check that the smell is not coming from a fire within your property.
- Ensure smoke alarms are working correctly.
- If you are concerned there may be a fire or immediate danger, call 999 immediately.
Preparing for a potential evacuation
Although most residents will not need to leave their homes, it is sensible to be prepared:
- Keep mobile phones charged.
- Have essential medication readily available.
- Know where important documents are located.
- Follow advice from the Emergency Services and local authorities.
When to seek medical advice
Contact NHS 111 Wales or your GP if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing.
- Persistent coughing or wheezing.
- Chest pain.
- Significant irritation to your eyes, nose or throat.
