Safe to stay flats

Purpose-built blocks of flats and maisonettes are built to provide you with some protection from fire. This means that walls, floors, and doors can hold back flames and smoke for 30 to 60 minutes.

In the event of fire at your home. It’s important that you know exactly what actions to take in the event of fire.

Fire inside your flat

  • Take the normal way out – don’t use the lift if ones installed.
  • Don’t waste time investigating what’s happened or rescuing valuables – remember, get out, stay out and close the door behind you.
  • Move as quickly but as safely as you can to exit the building.
  • Close doors behind you to slow down the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Call 999 as soon as you are safe to do so.
  • Muster at the designated “Fire Assembly Point” and await the arrival of the Fire Service.

 

Fire in some else’s flat  

  • You are “Safe to Stay” in your own flat, unless
  • Your flat is being affected by fire or smoke.
  • You feel unsafe.

 

Fire in the communal area

If a fire starts in the communal area and you’re there:

  • Move as quickly but as safely as you can to exit the building.
  • Call 999 as soon as you are safe to do so.
  • Muster at the designated “Fire Assembly Point” and await the arrival of the Fire Service.
